Abstract:

High p_T measurements of pion, proton, K^0_s and Lambda production at midrapidity in Pb+Pb collisions at 158GeV/nucleon beam energy are presented. The most relevant ingredients of the data analysis are discussed, which ensure a reliable track reconstruction in the NA49-TPCs at p_T>2.5GeV/c for charged particles and the identification of neutral strange particles via their decay topology in the high track density environment of Pb+Pb collisions. The ratio of proton and pion yields in central relative to peripheral collisions, and the nuclear modification factor R_CP (as a function of p_T) is extracted and compared to RHIC measurements. Particle yield ratios (proton/pion and Lambda/K^0_s) are presented, showing a high p_T enhancement of the baryon/meson ratio for p_T>2.5GeV/c in central collisions at top SPS energies.
